Blueberry cobbler, blueberry pie, blueberry crisp - oh my! That's right, it's time to start baking everything blueberry, because it's officially blueberry season in Washington state. Of course before the baking can begin, the blueberries need to be picked, or picked up from a farm stand whichever you prefer. Here are our top picks for blueberries in Washington.
If you're looking to go the route of picking the blueberries yourself, we would recommend Friendly Grove Blueberry Farm in Olympia. With their u-pick season kicking off next week, it will be the perfect opportunity to grab a sun hat and head out for some delicious berries. With six acres of blueberry picking Four Elements Farm in Puyallup is another great option for blueberry picking. Varieties available for picking are Concord, Jersey, Dixie, Stanley and Weymouth and many of the bushes have been planted since World War II. A beloved feature of this farm are the oldest blueberry bushes that are now far too large to pick off of, but provide blueberry tunnels to walk through. Another great option for u-pick blueberries is Larsen Lake Blueberry Farm in Bellevue. Charging $2 a pound and providing picking buckets, this is the perfect farm to spend quality time with the family picking the delicious fruit directly from their bushes. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions reservations to u-pick are required and you must present a ticket (free) at your reserved picking time. If able, we would recommend heading up on a weekday, as the farm will be less crowded and more RSVP times available. For an option that doesn't require picking yourself we would recommend stopping by The Lakewood Farmers Market. Hosted at a new location this year, every Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. you can swing by Fort Steilacoom Park and pick up fresh blueberries from Hayton Farms Berries. Grown on Fir Island in the Skagit Valley, with farming roots dating back to 1876, they grow multiple varieties of blueberries including; Aurora, Blue Crop, Blue Ribbon, Vernon and multiple other varieties. Another great option for picking up flats of deliciously farm fresh blueberries is Spooner Berry Farms. With over 12 berry stands this business has been family owned for over 30 years and produces some of the best blueberries around.
