The 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, is the first to host the new Expert Soldier Badge (ESB) training and testing in conjunction with the established Expert Infantry Badge (EIB) certification last week on Joint Base Lewis-McChord North.

The EIB was authorized in 1944 to honor the infantry soldier's vital role in combat and to symbolize proficiency in combat skills.

On the Army's 244th birthday this year, the ESB was announced. It is designed to improve lethality and recognize excellence in soldiers who are not combat medics or do not serve in the infantry.

Five hundred ninety-eight soldiers began the joint certification process. One hundred fifty-one completed 33 tasks and were awarded an EIB; 68 completed 34 tasks and were awarded an ESB. The overall EIB/ESB pass rate was 37 percent.
