‘Birdies for the Brave’

Golf tournament helps soldiers, families

With spring here and summer just around the corner, heading off to a favorite golf course is readily understandable.

Combining that understanding with a desire to shoot "Birdies for the Brave" is the driving motivation for this year's 27th annual AUSA Golf Tournament.

The Meriwether Lewis Chapter of the AUSA works to support Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) soldiers and their families.

This tournament on the fairways and greens is one way of accomplishing that mission.

As to the name change ...?

"I wanted to have some fun with it; both names are inclusive," began Amy Tiemeyer, a dual branch manager for America's Credit Union (ACU).

"'Birdies for the Brave' is what I came up with to bring a smile to our faces."

The fundraiser represents an opportunity to give back to soldiers and their families, and it helps to build camaraderie between JBLM, Camp Murray, and the surrounding communities.

Organizers hope to host a full field of 144 golfers and to raise over $12,000.

All of the funds raised go to support JBLM soldiers and their families; none of the money goes to overhead, and all of the work is done by volunteers.

The fairway and greens event will be held at JBLM's Eagles Pride Golf Course Friday, June 28, and begins with a shotgun start at 12 noon.

Utilizing a scramble format, golfers can play in teams or as individuals. Prizes will be awarded, and dinner will be served afterwards.

A number of local businesses are again sponsoring the event, to include ACU, Titus Will Ford, Cannon Construction, Tactical Tailor & Grey Ghost Gear, Harborstone Credit Union, and Veterans Lending Group.
