Garrison Community Updates are hosted monthly by the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Garrison Command Team. The purpose of these meetings is to keep servicemembers, employees and spouses updated as to what is happening on JBLM.

This month's update recognized the runners who had trained for and participated in the Army 10-Miler Race.

The second largest 10-mile race in the country, it has been held for the past 34 years in October in Washington, D.C.

Col. Nicole Lucas, Joint Base Garrison Commander, recognized the runners who represented JBLM from I Corps units, the 4-160th Special Operation Aviation Regiment and the Madigan Army Medical Center.

The women's 10-miler team placed second for the second year in a row.  The men's 10-miler team placed 10th out of a field of 29 teams.

Lt. Col. Shoshannah Lane, Maj. Nicole Solana, Spc. Keysh Mejias Martinez, 1Lt. Dana Larsen and 1Lt. Sarah Schreck comprised the women's team. Their overall time was 4 hours, 39 minutes and 53 seconds.

The men's team featured 2Lt. Richard Williams, SSgt. Shawn Jenkins, Sgt. William Ezzard, Sgt. Robel Kebede and Spc. Nicodemus Ngetich. They turned in an overall time of 4 hours, 17 minutes and 14 seconds.

Both teams were coached by Dr. Shannon Baird, who is an ultra-marathon runner.

Another important announcement made at the meeting was that the Captain Meriwether Lewis Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) is formally establishing a new scholarship program -- the Col. Isabelle Jo Swartz Memorial Scholarship.

The program will further support for AUSA members and their graduating seniors.

After a distinguished career in the Army, Swartz worked as an American Red Cross volunteer, an officer on the board of the Fort Lewis Military Museum, and Commander, Regional Commander, and national staff officer of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars.

"These updates are extremely valuable," said Beth Ellis, a spokesperson for the updates, "and they are open to all."

The next scheduled Garrison Community Update will be Dec. 5 at the McChord Club. For further information, call 253.967.9496.
