JBLM Bodybuilding Championship draws a crowd

By Christina Butcher on August 16, 2018

Last Saturday, a high-energy crowd packed the Nelson Recreation Center at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, cheering loudly for bodybuilders strutting their stuff at the 2018 JBLM Bodybuilding Championship. Multicolored lights shone on contestants as they posed on stage before judges and audience members in the day's culminating performance event. In total, over 275 spectators showed up for the occasion, which included a nutrition clinic, functional fitness class, deadlift competition and bodybuilding competition.

Guest posers Michael Spencer and Tina “The Titan” Brown chatting with Army Sgt. Brian Kalenba during the event. Brown, who is a military spouse of an active-duty airman, is pursuing a career as a professional bodybuilder. Spencer, who won his first bodybuilding competition at JBLM in 2009, is an International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) professional bodybuilder.
“I owe everything to this show,” said Spencer. “I want to give soldiers coming back home from deployment an outlet other than drugs and alcohol. I want to use the title to motivate and inspire others in the military community through fitness.” Photo credit: Christina Butcher
