The Association of the United States Army's (AUSA) Lakewood Subchapter and the Tacoma Rainiers invite the Joint Base Lewis-McChord community to enjoy AUSA Night At The Rainiers Friday, April 6, at Cheney Stadium.

The second game of the season, the Rainiers will play the Sacramento River Cats.

The event is a fundraiser for the Lakewood Subchapter, and the proceeds go to the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), 2nd Infantry Division.

"This is a baseball game to honor the soldiers and families of the 2-2 SBCT," wrote Kent Troy, an AUSA official, in an email. "All the profits raised will go directly to support the brigade."

Troy pointed out that the $20 ticket includes a seat in the stands, a hot dog, chips and water. As for the Tacoma Rainiers, Troy said the organization has worked hard to provide a great sport experience for a decent price.

The Rainiers are a minor league team that plays in the Pacific Coast League and is the Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

"They are closer than going to Seattle and cheaper than a Mariners' ticket," continued Troy. "The game is also on Fireworks Friday, so bring the whole family to enjoy the post-game show."

This event strengthens the bond between the JBLM community and the Rainiers.

On April 16, 1960, the new Cheney Stadium hosted its first baseball game. Prior to the game, however, heavy rains had saturated the field. Stadium officials placed a call asking for help to then Fort Lewis. A couple of helicopters were sent to help dry off the field.

"We are honored to work with their organization in order to hold this event," continued Troy.

The 2nd SBCT is providing the Honor Guard, and a deserving soldier from the brigade will throw out the first pitch. During the 7th-inning stretch, the public will be invited to walk over to the party deck to meet and talk with the soldiers and their families.

"This game is about the soldiers, as that is what AUSA is here for -- to educate, inform and connect the Army to the American people," concluded Troy.
