Maj. Eric Reid will represent Joint Base Lewis-McChord as a member of the All Army Triathlon team from June 4-8 at the Armed Forces Championship in Hammond, Indiana. An officer with the 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, this will be his third year participating in the event.

Reid said he's always had an interest in sports and physical fitness. He said he's traditionally been interested in more team-oriented sports. But in recent years, he's been drawn to the intense physical challenge triathlons provide.

"I found out I was good at endurance sports and I enjoyed them," he added.

There is a friendly rivalry between members of the military's triathlon community. He explained that participating in athletic events has led him to meet many other soldiers from throughout the service.

The military triathlon community is relatively small, so members often get to know each other quick. The Army team includes both officers and enlisted men and women from active duty, the Reserves and the National Guard. The officer said events like this help build comradery.

He also believes it helps soldiers become tougher, more resilient and more confident. He said he thinks a commitment to fitness has benefits for all people.

"It gives people something to strive for," he observed.

The officer said that - perhaps ironically - he believes having an outlet for competitive spirit makes him a better team player. He said it makes him a better leader.

"Any competition where you put yourself out there and risk something, changes your outlook," Reid explained. "The first time you're truly challenged, it broadens your horizons and makes you reevaluate what you can do."

The All Army Sports Program is committed to "soldier readiness and well-being through athletic performance, military bearing and competitive spirit." The program supports soldiers pursuing a wide range of athletic disciplines including basketball, Tae Kwan Do, rugby, volleyball, wrestling, soccer and others.
