In 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day. That was a great idea.

On May 20, 1950, the idea was first celebrated. The theme of that first celebration was "Teamed for Defense," and it was celebrated with military exercises that allowed the public to have a look at their military and those who serve.

What's more, the day and the events allow the public to thank servicemembers for their work and sacrifices.

It is the single holiday for the American public to come together and thank our military members for their service in support of this nation. The day honors everyone serving in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy.

"This is the day on which we have the welcome opportunity to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces," a May 17, 1952 article in the New York Times proclaimed.

Within the context of the Korean War (1950-953), those words meant a great deal.

Nothing has changed.  This country still faces challenges around the world that require our military's experience and expertise, sometimes going into harm's way.

On Saturday, May 16, Joint Base Lewis-McChord will host its annual Armed Forces Day.  The theme is "Honor Those Who Answered the Call to Serve."

The venues will be Cowan and Memorial Stadiums.  Open to the public, admission is free. The public will be treated to fair food, kids' activities, military displays, historical reenactments and entertainment.

To enter JBLM, take I-5, Exit 119.

All the visitors to the event have to do is say "thank you."
