The Department of Defense today announced the deployment of 2nd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, to Afghanistan in spring 2012.

This deployment is the first to Afghanistan for the 2nd Stryker Brigade and has deployed twice to Iraq while stationed in Korea and at Ft. Carson.  They will deploy as "Task Force Lancer" and will continue the work of supporting the government of Afghanistan, partnering with the Afghan National Security Forces, and assisting in the security of the Afghanistan people.

The unit has done extensive training in preparation for deployment to include three brigade field exercise to Yakima and a successful rotation to the National Training Center in November 2011.

"I whole heartedly feel that the leaders and Soldiers of the Lancer brigade are trained and ready for this deployment to Afghanistan, said Maj. Gen. Lloyd Miles, Senior Army commander on Joint Base Lewis-McChord.  "They have done extensive and challenging field training and had a highly successful rotation to the National Training Center.

"I am mindful of the challenges, as well as the importance of this mission," said Col. Barry F. Huggins, Brigade Commander.  "The Lancer Brigade is prepared - well trained, well equipped, and well led - to accomplish whatever mission the nation asks of us, and we are honored to answer the nation's call.  Our Soldiers represent the breadth and depth of experience of the last 10 years at war, and will bring that experience to bear as we fulfill our mission, in accordance with our values and the Lancer Vision: "A Lancer is a protector, and a person of honor; together, we are a combat-ready brigade, trusted and respected by those who know us."
