FROM KIRO...

SEATTLE - Joint Base Lewis-McChord isn't expected to be impacted as heavily as bases in some other states by military cutbacks announced Thursday by U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

Panetta announced his plan to cut nearly $500 billion from the military's budget over the next 10 years. The Army will lose about 75,000 active duty soldiers in the next five years, while the Marines will lose about 20,000. The Navy and Air Force will retire old ships and jets. All told, the cuts will put the military at levels close to what it was before 9/11.

"Make no mistake: The savings that we are proposing will impact on all 50 states," Panetta said.

JBLM, though, will largely be spared. The base is a main staging area for operations in Asia and the Pacific, and its three Stryker Brigades are not on the chopping block.
