Over Thanksgiving weekend, the Iraq/Afghanistan Run for Remembrance 2011 took place as part of the Seattle Marathon. Operation Ward 57 organized a team of wounded warriors and fervent supporters from Joint Base Lewis-McChord and, together, they completed the 5k race on Nov. 26.
Tech. Sgt. Keith Sekora, who was injured last November while downrange in Afghanistan and is back here stationed at JBLM McChord Field, was one of those warriors. "I got back here in June (from Walter Reed Army Medical Center) and that's when I heard about Operation Ward 57," he said. "I knew I had to join them and that they could help me."
Running alongside Sekora were those representing lives that have been lost, like Staff Sgt. Christian Hamilton, of the 17th Fires Brigade, who ran the 5k in boots and a full ruck sack in honor of those killed or wounded in combat.
For Sekora, who completed the race in a recumbent bike on loan from the JBLM Warrior Transition Battalion, being able to do the race meant he was active again, something he used to take for granted. Luckily for him, Operation Ward 57 has worked with Ride to Recovery and the Wounded Warrior Project to obtain a recumbent bike of his own, specified to his needs, granting him the gift of mobility.
