Baby Boom reaches all-time high, sets new Madigan record

In the early part of 2011 there was baby boom buzz surrounding Joint Base Lewis-McChord, especially throughout the halls of Madigan Army Medical Center. Within a typical 24-hour period, five babies are born at Madigan; yet with the rapid redeployments of three Stryker brigades and other units in late 2010 and early 2011, those numbers were expected to rise to reflect a baby boom on base.

The latest and greatest record was set just last month, in October, when the hospital had a total of 257 births. This broke a previous record of 253 babies last June and of 250 babies in March 2009.

"The staff of Madigan's obstetrics service have been extremely busy this year supporting the births of a record number of babies," said Col. (Dr.) Peter Nielsen, Madigan's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology chief. "We made preparations more than two years ago for the record births we are seeing and the staff is extremely happy to help so many new families at JBLM."

Given the timeline, experts are preparing for numbers to drop off as they move through November and into December
