The Army announced Oct. 25 the planned activation of the 2-158th Assault Helicopter Battalion and the 46th Aviation Support Battalion at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

The activation will eventually add 995 military personnel to the installation. The move is part of the previously announced activation of the 16th Combat Aviation Brigade at JBLM and will be completed by Oct. 16, 2014.

The force structure actions, as part of the Army's broader strategic and operational requirements, incorporate initiatives to include Army Force Generation model and Army transformation, both of which are required to achieve the Army's goal of rebalancing the force.

Overall these unit activations will help the Army meet the increased demand placed on its aviation assets and provide combatant commanders with flexible, trained and highly mobile forces to execute operations worldwide.

The Army is transforming to provide a more relevant organization to meet its worldwide strategic and operational requirements.

The 16th CAB uncased its colors at JBLM in August. The unit moved from Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
