In light of the successful U.S. raid that resulted in Osama Bin Laden's death on Sunday, American military installations have begun to take steps to ensure their communities are safe against any reprisal terrorist organizations might be considering.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord is no exception. Installation officials have already started taking common-sense precautions to ensure the safety and security of the base.

"Considering the events of the past few several days, it's only appropriate that we review our force protection and take the steps we think appropriate to give our community the sense of security it deserves," said Col. Thomas Brittain, Joint Base Garrison commander.

"Some of the steps we're taking will be obvious; others will not, and that's deliberate. Our first priority is the well-being of our base community and we're going to exercise an abundance of caution by taking some prudent steps intended to provide security our service members and families can count on."

Installation officials are also asking Soldiers, Airmen, family members and civilians to be watchful for anything out of the ordinary in the coming days. Provided by the JBLM Directorate of Emergency Services, the following are examples of suspicious activity that should be reported if observed:

- People drawing or measuring important buildings

- People asking questions about security forces, security measures, or sensitive information

- Briefcase, backpack, suitcase, or package left unattended

- Vehicle parked in NO PARKING ZONES in front of an important building

- People in restricted areas where they are not supposed to be

- A person wearing clothes that are too big and too hot for the weather

- Chemical smells or fumes that worry you

- People purchasing weapons or uniforms without proper credentials

- Advocating support for terrorist organizations or objectives.

- Expressing hatred of American society, culture or government, or principles of the U.S. Constitution.

- Advocating the use of violence to achieve political, religious, or ideological goals.

- Sending large amounts of money to persons or financial institutions in foreign countries.

- Expressing a duty to engage in violence against DoD or the United States.

- Purchasing bomb-making materials.

- Inquiry or obtaining information about the construction and use of explosive devices.

- Expressing support for persons or organizations that promote or threaten the unlawful use of violence.

- Advocating loyalty to a foreign interest over loyalty to the United States.

- Financial contribution to a foreign charity or cause linked to an international terrorist organization.

- Evidence of terrorist training or attendance at terrorist training facilities.

- Repeated viewing of Internet Web sites, without official sanction, that promote or support international terrorist themes.

- Posting comments or exchanging information, without official sanction, at Internet chat rooms, message boards, or blogs that promote the use of force directed against the United States.
