SEATTLE -- The father of a soldier who tried to blow the whistle on an alleged plot to kill Afghan civilians for sport says his son has been removed from protective solitary confinement at his own request.

The father of Army Spc. Adam Winfield said Friday his son has been returned to the general population at a detention facility at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Winfield had been jailed on his own for about a month after he reported being threatened by one of his co-defendants.

His dad told The Associated Press that he's concerned about his son being housed with his co-defendants, but he couldn't stand any more time alone.

Winfield is one of five soldiers charged in the deaths of three Afghan civilians this year. He sent messages home to his parents after the first killing warning that his colleagues planned to kill more. Winfield's father called the Army but says no one acted on his warning.
