A weekly U.S. edition of the editorially independent Stars & Stripes, authorized by the Department of Defense for carrying news to military communities since 1861, is coming this spring to military personnel serving in the South Sound area.

Swarner Communications, publishers of The Ranger, NW Airlifter and Weekly Volcano newspapers have entered into a licensing agreement with Stars & Stripes to bring the paper here each week beginning May 2, 2013.

Particulars on the exact distribution plan are still in the works, said Ken Swarner, co-owner of Swarner Communications.

"We are thrilled to bring the national and international coverage Stars & Stripes offers so well to the South Sound," Swarner said.

The U.S. edition of Stars & Stripes are already being published in a few U.S. locations, including Virginia and Hawaii, with Alaska coming on soon.

"Please stay tuned for more particulars, including some fun contests and promotions as we get closer to a launch," Swarner added.
