JBLM spouse, sister run local photography business

Most new parents take lots of pictures of their newborn babies. It's only natural to want to preserve those precious moments because they pass all too quickly.

Even before daughter Grace (now almost 9) was born, Casey Stewart and her sister Amy Apelar were busy capturing the moment. Once Grace was born, the sisters continued to take lots of pictures.

"We adored taking pictures of our children," said Stewart, an Army spouse whose husband Mike is a Special Forces Soldier on Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Their passion for photography grew, and the sisters - Puyallup natives and Rogers High School graduates - knew they were on to something.

Neither has a background in photography, but they soon realized "we were pretty good at this," said Stewart, an emergency room nurse at Madigan who lives in Yelm.

So they decided to try their hand at taking pictures of other people's children, and their company, Synergy Photography, was born. Both are busy mothers and run their business from their homes.

"We make it as busy as we want it to be," said Apelar, who lives in Lacey.

The Synergy sisters bring the studio to you - from low key waterfronts, eclectic alleys and local farming fields, Stewart and Apelar create one-of-a-kind photo shoots with a local and unique flavor. With some props (especially for newborn photo shoots) and other ideas, any home or location can become ideal for a photo shoot, Stewart said.

Along with family, infant, wedding and high school senior portraits, Synergy is known for its letter photography. About five years ago, the sisters started taking pictures of unusual items shaped like letters and stringing together words. Now it's their signature style.

Their prices are also extremely competitive. Sessions start at $75, which includes an on-location photographer, proofs and 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 prints.

Synergy Photography will have a booth at the upcoming Lewis Community Spouses Club Holiday Bazaar, which runs Nov. 3, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Nov. 4, noon to 5 p.m. at the MWR Tent, 2272 Liggett Avenue on JBLM Main.
