For the last eight years, the Melting Pot franchise has supported St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in its fight against childhood cancer through its Thanks and Giving campaign. This year's campaign began in November and runs through January.
"We recommend $5 donations, so everyone can give," said Karen Lawler, director of marketing at Seattle Restaurants Unlimited, Inc., which owns four Melting Pot restaurants and two ‘Sip' restaurants in the state.
When patrons donate, they receive the equivalent in gift cards to use at any of the six locations in LaJolla, Bellevue, Seattle and Tacoma.
"What you give is what you get back for free," said Lawler. "And because 100 percent (of the) donations are given to St. Jude, your contribution really makes a difference."
Located in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude is one of the world's premiere pediatric cancer research centers. Dedicated to finding cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment, it has seen survival rates for childhood cancers increase from less than 20 percent in 1962 to 80 percent today.
"It is our responsibility to give back, and I can't think of a more deserving organization or cause," said Lane Scelzi, owner of Seattle Restaurants Unlimited.
Annually, more than 5,000 patients are seen at St. Jude. Because families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance, nor are children ever denied treatment because of a family's inability to pay, the hospital's daily operating cost is $1.7 million, which is primarily supported by donations and its national fundraising organization.
"Our goal this year is $20,000 for each restaurant," said Lawler.
The Tacoma team raised $10,000 last year, and since its inception in 2003, the Thanks and Giving campaign has raised more than $6 million for St. Jude.
