The Fort Lewis Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), which has approximately 1,200 members, has been working to expand its reach with the formation of five satellite subchapters in towns surrounding the base. That goal was realized this week when the second subchapter signed its bylaws and became active in Lakewood.
The first subchapter was established late last year at Camp Murray.
The hope it is that these satellite chapters will first help to educate the public on a more local level about the Army and then consistently garner support for those serving in uniform. Additionally, their presence is intended to forge a relationship between the AUSA members and soldiers, similar to the existing Community Connector program.
Col. Larry Saunders, who is the former chief of police in Lakewood, is the new president of the Lakewood subchapter. His first task will be to connect with the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, which will be coming home in about six months, and to concentrate on welcoming them back and providing community support. Additionally, Saunders would like to use his experience to reach out and develop ties with local veterans.
"There is power in numbers, so we are expanding. Our objective is for that power to be transformed into support for Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM)," said Carlene Joseph, president of the Fort Lewis chapter.
"Next up is Hawks Prairie. We are currently identifying the officers for that subchapter and hope to have the bylaws signed by the end of the week," Joseph said. From there, AUSA will focus on developing satellite branches in DuPont, Steilacoom and Puyallup. Eventually the organization would also like to extend its reach to Yakima, which Joseph was quick to point out, is also JBLM territory.
