In tight economic times, people reach out for assistance. And there is no better agency to turn to than the United Way. With more than 1,400 chapters throughout the U.S., this organization has set the benchmark on how to collect and distribute funds to those in need. A current fund-raising campaign is ongoing at Fort Lewis and every dollar donated helps, according to Nicole Milbradt, United Way senior marketing associate for Pierce County.
“Even during this financial crunch, we’ve still been able to fund projects that benefit our local community,” Milbradt said. “But, obviously, we are very appreciative of both contributions in terms of dollars as well as those who volunteer.”
For those that have a few hours to spare, the United Way has initiated a new program called Act Now: Whether an individual wants to commit to an on-going program, or can only work for a few hours, Act Now provides a multitude of hands-on opportunities.
“For example, we had a group of folks from McChord help with an environmental project that involved clearing up parts of Clover Creek,” Milbradt said. “They helped pull weeds and remove other debris. What we needed was helping hands for that project.”
But for those in need of help, the United Way has a multitude of ways they assist the military and civilian population in Pierce County.
Children, in need of dental services, are referred to providers in Lakewood and Parkland; young singles and couples, looking to connect to their community, attend social functions put on by the United Way; and newcomers can dial 2-1-1 during weekday business hours and get help finding childcare, a ride to the doctor’s office, or utility bill assistance.
“We want people to know that the United Way genuinely cares about others and our local community,” Milbradt said.
