Army helps rev up Saturday night at the races

I Corps band, WW II vehicle displays headline special night in Monroe

Those in attendance at the Evergreen Speedway on June 11 were there for a night of entertainment.

Not only did they see some exciting racing, but they also had the chance to celebrate the U.S. Army's 236th birthday.

The event started with a pre-race concert from Tuff Boxx & The Baghdad Horns. The I Corps band rocked the grandstands while those in attendance visited the Army recruiting booth, took a look at their favorite race cars up close and personal, and went back in time with restored WWII vehicles on display. For some visitors, it was just another night at the tracks. But for others, it was a night to honor the men and women who serve their country.

By the WWII vehicles, David King made laps in his full Army uniform with his dog Princess. This wouldn't be a uniform seen worn every day by the Soldiers on Joint Base Lewis-McChord: it was a WWII combat uniform with combat buckle boots. To some, King may just be considered a WWII collector, but he prefers the word "appreciator."

"I had all my mentors in WWII, and I appreciate all that they did for the world," King said. "This is one way of showing my appreciation and patriotism to our country - to restore and show these types of vehicles, so we don't forget what they have done for us and the whole world."

Art Wade served in the Army during Vietnam as an engineer. His job involved building roads and airstrips with the 84th Engineer Battalion, which he quickly noted was before the 101st Airborne Division. He thinks it is still important to honor those serving.

"They are over there keeping us safe; it's important to honor them," he said.

Mark Owens and his family were just on vacation from Walla Walla. He knew he wanted, "lots of tire smoke, good crashes and a safe evening for all," but he also knew the importance of celebrating the U.S. Army's birthday.

"Without them, we don't get to come watch racing," he said.

Evergreen Speedway is located at 14405 179th Ave SE, Monroe.
