At a redeployment and change of command ceremony held Thursday morning on Watkins Field, a soldier received a Silver Star, a brigade was welcomed home and then reflagged and one commander relinquished command to another.

Several thousand individuals turned out to officially welcome home 5th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division from its deployment to Afghanistan.

"You have performed admirably," said Maj. Gen. John Johnson, commanding general, I Corps Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

One of those soldiers was Sgt. Jarrett Brown, who received a Silver Star for "gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy."

After the award ceremony, the 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division was reflagged to 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.

"Since our inception in 2007, we have never technically cased our colors," said 5th Brigade's commander, Col. Harry Tunnell.

Moments later, Tunnel helped case 5th Brigade's colors, uncase 2nd Brigade's colors and then relinquish command to Col. Barry Huggins.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord is now home to the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team and the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team.
