Soldiers charged in deaths of Afghan civilians

(JBLM Release) - Charges were preferred Tuesday evening against three additional soldiers who are accused in the deaths of three Afghan civilians between Jan. and May 2010. A fourth Soldier, Spc.Jeremy Morlock, was charged on June 4 with three specifications of pre-meditated murder and one specification of assault and is currently in pre-trial confinement at JBLM. A fifth Soldier, Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs was charged in Kuwait on June 8 and is expected to arrive at JBLM within days.

All five Soldiers are assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. The soldiers deployed to Afghanistan in July 2009 with their unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Charges against Pvt. 1st Class Andrew Holmes, Specialist Michael Wagnon and Specialist Adam Winfield, include one specification of murder under Uniform Code of Military Justice, Article 118 - Premeditated Murder. Each soldier is suspected in separate incidences. Holmes, Wagnon and Winfield returned to JBLM on June 14, and were placed in pre-trial confinement.

Jurisdiction of their cases passed to JBLM upon their redeployment.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord officials emphasize that the charges constitute an accusation and that the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
