Biography

After listening to the four tracks Pretty Ugly has posted on MySpace, and noticing the band has Pabst, Camel Cigarettes, and the Lusty Lady in their top 12, I knew Pretty Ugly was for me. “If you still have a jean jacket, old cassette tapes & like your rock and roll full of drunken debauchery,” Pretty Ugly is your kind of band. Ever wish that rock would take a few steps backwards?Believe it or not, there was a time when the genre served as more than a bullhorn for androgynous hipsters sporting $100 haircuts to whine into. There was also a time when it was a bastion for a jaded counterculture, one that was sick of corporate America spewing commercialization down its throat. Yes, there was a time when rock wasn't so, well, bloated. Pretty Ugly, the members of which hail from the Seattle and surounding areas, are the epitome of rock and roll's true essence. Basically, they’re a band of self-deprecating, unpretentious miscreants who just don’t give a flying fuck. They are the dregs of Generation X/Y, representing the burgeoning ranks of 20-somethings who want an escape from work-a-day Society, Inc. And, they make some darn good rock and roll, stripped of all the posturing and pretensions that suffocates today’s corporate radio. While its sound is nowhere near retro, Pretty Ugly's influence is combed across generations of rock. From roots-metal Black Sabbath to hardcore percussions, the band's edgy sound and attitude hark back to rock in its most raw form. Combining elements that hark back to the birth of metal with punk-pop sensibilities, Pretty Ugly blasts a type of unrefined, viscerally raw music they endearingly dub "Dirtbag Rock N Roll." Nick Przybyciel (Tacoma Weekly)
