Tournament of Breakfast: The championship game is set

Email Blog Post Print Blog Post Share on Facebook Share on Reddit Share on StumbleUpon

SATURDAY, MARCH 31: EAT BREAKFAST OUT THIS WEEKEND >>>

Over the past three weeks, the Weekly Volcano challenged 64 of the South Sound's best breakfast joints to go griddle-to-griddle in a showdown of culinary combat. Some fell easily by the wayside, either due to inferior skills or simply because they faced a superior opponent. Stack by stack, we ate our way down to yesterday's Final Four: Cicada Restaurant, Moon Rise Cafe, Alfred's Cafe and Dirty Oscar's Annex. It was do-or-die, fry-or-bake, bring-your-best-pancake. After the last egg was cracked, nearly 5,000 people voted yesterday.

Believe it or not, fine readers, there have been days during the Tournament of Breakfast when, by noon or so, it was already obvious which breakfast joints would be moving on and which would be going home. There were blowouts ... oh were there ever. Sometimes, it made our job a little easier; we could work on the next day's copy at a decent hour of the evening without fear the game would suddenly turn.

Oh, but yesterday was different. Yesterday, the votes just kept coming - from tipoff to the final buzzer. And both games did a complete 180 at night. Crazy.

Yesterday's Tournament of Breakfast Results

Here were the match-ups:

Ciciada Restaurant (No. 10 seed) vs. Moon Rise Cafe (No. 7 seed)

Alfred's Cafe (No 1 seed) vs. Dirty Oscar's Annex (No. 2 seed)

The Moon Rise Café and Cicada Restaurant match marked the biggest comeback in a Tournament of Breakfast game. In fact, it was the biggest comeback in Weekly Volcano food tournament history. Cicada was handing it to the Lakewood café, smoking them with 70 percent of the votes at 6 p.m. Then, just as they had to do when a senior citizen rammed his car into its front dining room early this winter, the Moon Rise rallied back. Lead by its one-two punch hikers scramble special and Moonrise Benedict, with outside help from that secret homemade raspberry jam - the Moon Rise mounted a surge. When the buzzer went off at 11:45 p.m., Moon Rise Cafe looked up at the scoreboard, and collapsed with smiles at the 563-vote victory margin. It was one for the menus.

The other match, Alfred's Café and Dirty Oscar's Annex, also involved a comeback, although not as dramatic. Alfred's Café came into the tournament as the East Region's number one seed and didn't disappoint - at least in the opening 600 minutes. Alfred's lead all morning and afternoon with an average lead of 30 votes, without any help from the Internets. Its tasty biscuits and gravy, and a stream of Bloody Marys, was maintaining its lead. At 5:43 p.m., with the help of its late-rising crowd, Dirty's Oscar's poured it on - and over its pancakes stuffed with cheesy sausage. The Sixth Avenue "Public House" began racking up votes in an eye-popping display of waffle wizardry and Jack Daniels caramel cinnamon roll with poached egg cooked in the center awesomeness. In the end, when the last braised elk hash left the kitchen, D.O.A. managed to score a whopping 700 votes over Alfred's Café, and a date with Moon Rise Café in the championship game Monday.

Monday's Breakfast Battle: The Championship Game

Here we go. Moon Rise Cafe out of the West Region will face Dirty Oscar's Annex, the top breakfast out of the Greater Downtown Tacoma/Sixth Avenue Region, Monday, April 2 when the polls open around 9 a.m. Online voting runs until 5 p.m. At 6 p.m. the voting opens back up live at the Tournament of Breakfast Final Party at Meconi's Tacoma Pub & Grill, 709 Pacific Ave. in downtown Tacoma. Ballots will be handed out, which will also serve as free raffle tickets for awesome prizes. The live vote will close at halftime of the NCAA Men's Tournament final and the South Sound Breakfast Champion will be announced.

This weekend, pack the car and eat breakfast at the Moon Rise Cafe one morning and Dirty Oscar's Annex the other morning. Compare notes with your neighbors. Then come Monday, vote here on Spew then join us at Meconi's.

Thanks again for voting.

Well I have to admit not sure if Dirty Oscars should be the winner except that they paid us to vote for them . Feel bad now since I have only had breakfast there once and it was just okay. Night life is better!!! Great drinks

Not sure if this was a fair vote since i was able to get $$ off my bill if I voted for Dirty Oscars. Had breakfast there only once and it was okay. Dinner is okay and that is where we were last night when they asked us to vote and receive a discount...Who Wouldn't want a discount?

Having the most excellent breakfast at the Moon Rise, and they don't have to pay me to vote for them. Simple, good food, great service, and a family friendly vibe. They truly deserve to win this thing.

The fact that the Harvester, the HARVESTER beat Marsha's invalidates this Tournament.

You're talking about fair voting for the Moonrise Cafe...this is on their facebook page...
Michael Ryan Clark says "Just voted on my phone, computer, and a friend's computer. Help me get a life? hahah" So that guys voted 3 times. That doesnt seem right...unless this tournament is for fun, which I'm prettty sure all of these contests are aren't they? Like King 5 Western WA Best of...popularity contest. South Sound Mag's Best of...popularity contest. Saw mny businesses offering free classes, free dinners, free beers, free whatever they were hawking in order to get votes. Take a chill pill and go find your integrity, Dee and Dorothy. If u thoguht the food at DOA was just "OKAY" then why'd u vote for it? Casue you got a discount they offer all the time? (i cut one out of the Volcano last week to go try it). By the way, I didnt vote for anybody after The Hob Nob cause I like them best, but its been fun (key word) to follow the contest.

We, as a local business, support the Weekly Volcano, our South Sound local paper, by running an ad with a coupon for $5 off every week. EVERY week, all the time. We offered it before the tournament and we're gonna offer it after the tournament. We decided to offer that same $5 off to people that got involved with the tournament and voted. We asked to see proof that they voted…anybody paying attention knows that after you vote, a little message appears on the screen that says “Thanks for using Survey Monkey” or something similar, but does not show who was voted for. We’re having fun with all of this, like that guy Rob said….it’s basically a popularity contest. If it really was about who had the very best breakfast then a panel of elite judges would be determining the winner, not the average Joe and Jane off the street that have very different ideas of what constitutes “Best”.
Let’s face it… the breakfast food at all of the 64 restaurants/bars nominated isn’t that comparable.
If this is about who’s got the best breakfast that the South Sound has to offer then it would be a tie between Old Milkwaulkie, Shakabrah, Babblin Bab’s, Marcia’s, etc…Or there’d be separate categories for best ethnic breakfast (btw, Vuelva la Vida wasn’t even in the running- hello!), best American classic, best French nouveau, best Southern breakfast and on and on. Truth be told we’re shocked we beat Shakabrah…breakfast is what they do all the time in their restaurant…and we’re just a bar…that does breakfast and dinner… We think we do a good job and offer unique food we’re proud of.

For the record…We don’t think we did anything wrong by offering the same $5 coupon/discount that we run in the Volcano to see proof of voting (remember, we wouldn’t know if someone voted for us or not). We’ve been completely transparent through this whole thing. We have fun, support other local businesses, offer 20% off to all industry workers on Sundays, go to lots of places, spread our money around, try different foods…we suggest you do the same. Oh and we use a coupon if its offered. Come see us and you decide if you like what we've got AND PLEASE use one of the discount coupons we offer all the time ??"Jake and the Crew at D.O.A.

I want to start by saying what a great idea this tournament is. The Vocano has once again spurred the rain soaked mobs of Tacoma into action to try and get an "honest" answer to the ever pending question of who serves the best breakfast. Unfortunately, the staff at the Vocano does not have the funding or the resources to monitor the integrity of each restaurant that is involved. Therefore, shame on you DOA. Shame on you for paying for votes (and come on, you know that the customers were obligated to vote for DOA), but most of all, shame on you for posing as a breakfast joint when so many places fire up thier grills at five o'clock in the morning seven days a week. In my option, which seems to be that of the general public, a true breakfast place doesnt just serve great food, they practice ethics.

Nice soap box there, Gail. Bet you work at Moonrise. You should shove that shame shame talk somewhere else. That's not what DOA is doing. Those are hard working people that brought a good bar to 6th ave instead of another empty building. I was given a discount slip by one of DOA’s lady bartenders last week. She told me I should come and try breakfast. Said if I liked it and wanted to vote for DOA then they would take $5 off my bill. I don’t think my vote was bought. I went in to de4cide for myself. nobody made me vote for them. she said I'd get the $5 off just for voting. On Friday I tried that stuffed hashbrown thing and liked it. Pretty good I thought. compared to lots of fulltime breakfast restaurants, I say that bar is making more interesting stuff. Best in Tacoma? I don’t know. But for that voting I did vote for DOA cause I liked it better than alfreds. I didn’t even know DOA had breakfast before this. If I didn’t think it was good, I wouldn’t have voted for them. The service was okay, the girls were hustling. But I’m thanking DOA for suggesting I come try it. and for making it easier on my wallet to take a gamble on a new place by giving me that $5 off.

Buying votes? Gimme a break. That's ridiculous. The people at DOA are solid. I ate there about 2 weeks ago and the bartender told me to go grab a Volcano, and get the $5 coupon. Didnt have to do that, coudl of charged me full price, but they're good like that. Got $5 off which i appreciated. We never talked about voting. I did last week because I like their food and the laid back vibe waybetter than all the other hurry up and eat and get out places. And its not a greasy spoon. And they serve Starbucks. And the waitresses are hot. And the juke box rules. And they serve breakfast til 4pm. I could go on and on. TACOMA REPRESENT! Don't let Lakehood win!!

What are you, my grandma Gail? I haven’t been shame’d since I was 5.
We never claimed to be a "breakfast place". Not once, not ever. We don't even claim to be a restaurant...because we're not. Dirty Oscar's Annex is a bar, A BAR, as it clearly says in my previous post. We’re open till 2am every single night and still manage to get in there and “Fire up our grill” at 630am in order to open at 8am. Our crowd isn’t looking to eat at 5am and that’s not what we’re about either. We'd love to be open 7 days a week and serve breakfast more than just on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. But that's not possible right yet (we've only been open a little over a year and it takes time to get things going). And we’re not buying votes, that’s just stupid. We’ve invited people to come try breakfast, if they like it, great. Then they can vote for us. If not, then they don’t have to. We said show us they voted, that they were participating in the tournament in order to get the $5 off. You can twist this up any way you want, but that’s the reality. We’re all adults and have the right to choose and vote any way we want. If somebody felt so pressured and obligated to vote for us they should grow a set and just vote their choice. You want to come in and try our breakfast, come on in. You don’t like it or think it’s better than whoever we’re up against in this tournament, then don’t vote for us. You’d still get $5 off for showing us you voted. Period. We appreciate new people coming in to try us out and that right there is worth $5. ...Vote or no vote.

Stay classy Jake. Say Classy.

I was planning on voting for DOA tomorrow but your attitude I think I'll drive over to "Lakehood" and see if your competition has a little more grace. Who knows, maybe their food is as good as Old Milwaukee's or Marcia's. This may be a popularity contest, but I'll be damned if I'm going to vote for some spoil sports.

I'm an employee at D.O.A so, of course, take this with that in mind. Jake is totally right that we just look at the screen on their phone that says that they voted and don't actually watch our guests vote. Much like Jesse Venture didn't have time to bleed in Predator, we are too busy busting our butts to actually watch our guests vote. Heck, they could be voting for our competition and thinking that we're a bunch of suckers. We wouldn't know. So good luck to the Moon Rise, it's gonna be a heck of a battle. And if you have any doubts about our breakfast cred, stop by and try it some weekend. I'll be the ridiculously handsome bus boy wishing you a warm good morning and selling you on the wonders of our Moonshine Mary's. Cheers!

Everyone appreciates the support of the Daily Volcano but there's one itty bitty issue with offering an incentive for people to vote while they're in your establishment.

"The terms funding bias, sponsorship bias, funding outcome bias, or funding publication bias refer to an observed tendency of the conclusion of a scientific research study to support the interests of the study's financial sponsor."

Well Jake I guess you need to be shamed--sounds like you have no respect for your grandma! I am glad you admit you never called DOA a breakfast place because it is not as for the bar that is why people order your breakfast they are drunk and as we all know everything tastes better drunk even the DOA food
