The Deltan Club in Tacoma will rock this Saturday, as a trio of bands and a DJ will add flavor to the stage, each sound different from the next.
"We wanted a unique show, we wanted a smorgasbord," says Ray Hayden, promoter and musician.
The show will start at 7 p.m. with DJ Ninja Kat spinning house, down-temp and eclectic. The Whoopee Cats take the stage at 8 p.m., and Ray Hayden and Friends get things kicking around 9 p.m. The headliner, Kim Archer Band, begins at 10:30 p.m.
Two 20-something girls make Whoopee Cats. Managed by Kim Archer, Laurel Lundgren and Jill Nelson combine powerful guitar, often with slide, with vocals that rival legends, to create a sound Hayden says is "soulful Led Zeppelin meets Heart."
If Whoopee Cats take the classic rock twist, then Ray Hayden and Friends have got easy listening covered.
Ray Hayden and Friends (Susan Renville on vocals, Chris Tussing on drums, Scott Malone on guitar and Rafael Tranquilino on bass) are a Tacoma area favorite, and expect to hear a little Supertramp/Chicago influence from these mellow rockers.
Rounding off the complimentary but uniquely different bands is Kim Archer Band.
Never has a group been able to encompass the passion and variety of the blues/funk/rock genre as Kim Archer Band. From soulful covers to originals, Kim Archer has earned a reputation for engaging the audience in a musical ride like no other.
The mixed-up lineup is a trend Hayden and others in the music scene hope to see more of.
"While the community is growing, we're trying to creatively come up with lineups," says Hayden. "There's a plethora of amazing talent out there and the cool thing is the people involved are an integral part of the music community."
The other aspect of this show that sets it apart is venue choice. The Deltan Club is not the usual go-to. There's the Backstage, The Swiss, Jazzbones and others that are the standard venues in town, says Hayden.
"We're trying to help some of the other venues around town get exposure," he says.
Open for just over a year, The Deltan Club is a theater and dance club that has a variety of performances from comedy to illusion, belly dancing to charity balls, and of course, music.
Expand your horizons this Saturday and check out a new lineup at a new venue.
"The coolest thing is we're bringing the young in with the established," Hayden says.
