Point Defiance PARK and Ruston are perfect examples and just a few of the reasons that Tacoma is so rad. Sweeping waterfront views and fabulous patio dining options paired with kayak, parasailing and picnic areas define the town of Ruston, making it a prime destination for a casual stroll, lunch and dinner, cruising and more. Point Defiance boasts 702 acres of old-growth forests, 5 Mile Drive - a whimsical destination for a run or a drive, loads of wildlife, whether caged in the zoo or roaming the park grounds, and just about every park-like setting, from the duck ponds and rose gardens to Owen Beach and Zen-like pagoda. Point Defiance Park and Ruston are the epitome of what a city can offer when lined along the vast ocean.

PDZA is a destination separate from the park it resides in. Peek in on the cute meerkats, feed the goats and budgies, marvel at the monstrous polar bears or hop on a camel for a ride. A new addition includes a forested zip line course for true adventurers. 5400 N. Pearl St., Tacoma, 253.591.5337 or www.pdza.org. Open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Antique Sandwich Company has persevered through the years with classic deli sandwiches and coffee, often having a line out the door. The ambiance is casual if not a bit worldly, with a combination of comfy worn tables and chairs and merchandise and art from all over the world throughout. Antique Sandwich Company also hosts regular open mic nights on Mondays and Tuesdays for those who perform or just want to come out and support local talent. 5102 N. Pearl St., Tacoma, 253.752.4069.
