Helping those who need it most

Seattle Union Gospel, a mission that brings hope to the community

By Claire Nunn on October 2, 2020

Seattle Union Gospel Mission has been serving those in need for 88 years with their services dating back to the Great Depression. From a kettle borrowed from a local candy store, they opened their doors and began serving soup to those in need.

Today they continue to serve the members of the Seattle community day in and day out. "Our mission is to bring the love of Jesus and hope for a new life for our homeless neighbors" said Hilary Dunham, Director of Marketing. She continued on to discuss what sets the mission aside from others, and the thing that most stood out was, "We don't wait for people to come to us, we go to them."

Going out to bring their services to those who need it most falls into one of their four core areas of programming, survival. Every night, 365 days a year, their Search + Rescue vans drive around the city to provide lifesaving supplies and care to both men and women living without shelter. These supplies include blankets, food and water. However, beyond these basic necessities they offer so much more including a prayer and a listening ear to those who need it most.

The second area of programming at the mission is stabilization which focuses on satisfying basic needs. These needs include hot meals, dental hygiene, shelter, post-hospital recovery and much more.

The third area of focus is recovery. Offering year-long programs for both men and women these faith-based programs focus on helping individuals leave their addictions behind and give them a foundation to start a new life of sobriety.

Their last area of focus is post-graduation, which helps both men and women take the next step towards regaining stable work and other responsibilities. These services include transitional housing, continuing education and job placement.

Despite the unprecedented times 2020 has brought, Seattle Union Gospel Mission has continued to offer the majority of all their services and has gone above and beyond in the community to ensure all are still safely taken care of despite the pandemic.

The Seattle's Union Gospel Mission's CFC donation number is 33329.
