The weather in Washington state is usually a hindrance for getting outside and being active, especially during these cold winter months. Frigid temperatures mixed with periods of torrential downpour aren't exactly calling any of us off the couch. Are you or your family in need of something special to get you out there and moving? How about organized, themed marathons for the family? Or tots baseball and soccer conveniently located and at reasonable prices? How about adult, organized intramural sports? The Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) on Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) have an abundance of fitness, sports, and recreational programs for all ages throughout the winter and spring.

To get started with Youth Sports and Fitness (and CYS), families must be registered with Parent Central Services, available on both Lewis Main and McChord Field. All DoD ID cardholders are eligible to register, and the process is free of charge. Once active in the system, you can access and view all of the upcoming programs and details through webtrac, such as registration dates and deadlines, any associated fees, and dates/times for practices. Kids can choose from baseball (or T-ball for the younger ones), swim team, strength training, or gymnastics through SKIES Unlimited if they are currently enrolled at a JBLM Child Development Center. Special Olympics Washington is also offering aquatics, soccer, basketball, and cheerleading for all kids ages 8-18 with or without special needs. Once registered, your older teens and tweens (grades 6-12) can also access the Hillside Youth Center where they can socialize, play games, and even enjoy meals with their peers. Also, don't forget, kids and their families can enjoy recreational swim time at the Soldier Fieldhouse indoor pool weeknights and weekends.

For the adults, individual fitness goals can be met at one of the five fitness centers located on JBLM, some including 24/7 access (preregistration required). If it's a team you're looking for, open league sports are available to all adults with base access and include basketball, softball, volleyball and flag football. Maybe you want to get active and meet people, but aren't interested in competing. Then check out the upcoming outdoor activities planned through Outdoor Recreation. Embrace winter with a snowshoeing or snowmobiling excursion. Or start preparing for the warmer weather with an intro to kayaking class. Similar to youth registration, you can register and access all the details via webtrac, including trip dates and costs. The options are abundant and sure to inspire you off the couch.

The purpose of the JBLM MWR is to provide programs and resources to help improve the quality of life for servicemembers and their families, thus enhancing mission readiness. Through Child and Youth Services (CYS), Outdoor Recreation, and the Sports and Fitness Programs, health and well-being opportunities are presented throughout the year on JBLM. In the coming months, enjoy sports, outings, and individual fitness options available to everyone from young children to full families to single soldiers and airmen. No matter your goals or dreams this winter, MWR can help you get there. Visit jblm.armymwr.com for more details.
