At the beginning of the year, the Lewis Community Spouses Club (LCSC) launched a new subclub, MilSpouse in Business. The purpose of the group is to provide the opportunity for military spouses who are also business owners to network with each other. More experienced business owners serve as mentors and provide tips about how to navigate owning a business and moving every few years.

"I wanted to help get this subclub off the ground because I saw a need for our MilSpouse business owners to have a safe place to network and learn from each other," said cofounder Pam McFarland, a spouse and owner of Salted Vinegar Design Studios ( who has experience running her own business across multiple moves. "It's been so fun meeting so many others that are going through the daily joys of small business building. It's truly encouraging."

Serena West is the president of the LCSC and helped found the subclub with McFarland. She is also the successful business owner of Westhouse (

"Many military spouses choose to embark on an entrepreneurial path in order to maintain the flexibility this life often demands. LCSC MilSpouse in Business creates a space where spouses can network as well as share the successes and struggles of growing a small business," she said.

The subclub has quickly become very popular and currently has 48 members.

"I love the idea of partnering with other military spouses to grow in business and in relationships. As a member of a multi-level marketing company, I see the value in having a business I can move with me and develop those relationships. Our MilSpouse in Business group is instrumental in the relationship part. We get to laugh together and share what we're learning from month to month," said Cathy Tremain-Hicks, Young Living essential oils (

The group tries to meet once a month for either lunch or dinner. The next meeting is Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at Infernos Brick Oven Pizza in Lacey. It will be a networking opportunity and a chance to enjoy some great pizza. The group also has a very active Facebook page with many posts relating to events in the community that will appeal to the group. It also acts as a forum to ask questions and get advice from the members.

"The subclub is for any Lewis Community Spouses' Club member who owns a small business, is a consultant, writes a blog or wants to start one of the above. It's a safe environment to network with fellow military spouses and learn from each other," McFarland said. "We will be sharing tools and resources to help all of us grow our businesses."
