Officials from Joint Base Lewis-McChord briefed the community as part of their regular community outreach last week focusing on changes in housing, public works and more.

Housing: Lincoln Military Housing is now running military housing.  There has been a name change from neighborhoods to districts.  There has been no change in day-to-day operations - rents are still payable through allotments, housing rules and policies are the same, and renter's insurance is still required.  Residents are asked to keep policies up-to-date and provide Lincoln Military Housing with proof of insurance.

The Rainier Inn is going to renovate in September, at building 2111.  It will be a cash-and-carry event, where servicemembers will have an opportunity to buy the entire room, though at the end of the sale, individual items will be for sale.  Sales will be donated to the Fisher House.

Public Works: Lewis Exchange will be undergoing major renovations next summer.  The Exchange will grow from 141,000 square feet to 250,000; the process is expected to take about two years.  In summer of 2018, work on the Entertainment Center will begin.  There will be restaurants and a movie tavern, where patrons can order food and beverages from the movie seats.

School Liaison: Clover Park Public Schools will begin on Aug. 31. New student registration requires a housing or apartment contract, Immunization records for each child, the last report card or last school's information, and for kindergarten students, a birth certificate. Parents and students are encouraged to take part in schools' meet-and-greet orientations.  Contact the school your child will go to for date and time and see the classroom, meet the teacher, and get an idea of what your child's school day will look like.

Madigan Army Medical Center: the Madigan surveys formerly known as Apples, are now Joes, shifting from an Army-based system to a joint system.  These surveys ensure quality care from military medical providers.  Feedback has already enabled the hospital to improve emergency room wait times and inpatient satisfaction.

As school begins, it is also time to make appointments for physicals.  Call 1.800.404.4506 to make appointments at the hospital.  Once school is in session, routine appointments can be made through the School Based Health System at Lakes, Steilacoom, and Rogers High Schools, Harrison Prep, and Pioneer, Woodbrook and Mann Middle Schools.  Sign up at the school for this service.

Directorate Plans, Training, Mobilization, and Security: Key events follow for August: Aug. 13, Grillin' & Chillin' BBQ Competition, Noon to 5 p.m. at Freedom Park; Aug. 19, Joint Base Commander Golf Tourney, 1 p.m. at Whispering Firs; Aug. 20, Deuces Wild Sprint and Olympic Triathlon, 9 a.m. at Shoreline Park; Aug. 25-28, Boy Scouts of Washington Jamboree; Aug. 26-28, Airshow and Warrior Exposition, McChord Field.
