Calling all South Sound fathers and daughters. Time to perfect those Princess Leia braids and dust off those light sabers. You are invited to a galaxy far, far away for Lakewood's 14th annual Father-Daughter Dance.

Sponsored by Lakewood Parks and Rec, this year's Star Wars-themed dance will be held Saturday, March 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Lakes High School Commons. Fathers and their daughters will dance to tunes from a live DJ among Star Wars décor.  Admiral Akbar's Snack Bar will offer all sorts of tantalizing snacks, including Fruit Sabers, Darth Cheddar and Chewbacca Crackers, Obi-Wan Kenobi Carrots and Dooku Dip, Padawan Popcorn, Princess Lays, Wookie Cookies and, of course, R2D2 Root Beer Floats.

There will be a glow photo booth for fathers and daughters to commemorate this special evening, and, while costumes are encouraged, they are not required. Participants are free to dress however they choose, from casual to semi-formal to the signature outfits of favorite Star Wars characters.

For 14 years, the city of Lakewood has sponsored this event to encourage bonding between fathers and daughters within the community. For some, these annual dances have become a not-to-be-missed family tradition.

Volunteers are key to the evening's success, and more are needed. One of last year's volunteers, Zeynep Ozturk, a student from Turkey, observed:

I saw one father who was wearing a blue suit, and his daughter was wearing a matching blue dress like a princess. Her father pulled out her chair so she could sit down for dinner; it was so nice to watch. The father gave his daughter undivided attention (and they) danced all night. He put a smile on her face; I could tell she was really happy. They took a lot of pictures with a professional photographer and selfies, (too). While they were taking pictures, I could see it was not just a picture. It was a memory for a lifetime ...

Overall, the event was really memorable for daddy and daughter relationships ... I was very glad to see how fathers share ... love with (their) daughters (through) this magical event. The social event ended with the little girls twirling around in their dresses and holding hands with their daddies as they left the dance happy.

If you'd like to volunteer, contact Sally Martinez at smartinez@cityoflakewood.us or 253.983.7758.

Participants must register at cityoflakewood.us/events. The cost for the evening is $35 per couple and $10 for each additional daughter.

So get out those pod racers and get ready for a night Daddy and his little girl will never forget. Besides, what father doesn't want an excuse to mutter those immortal words, "I am your father?"

Mark your calendars for March 12, and register online before it's too late.

And may the Force be with you!
