A night of drinks with friends and playing Cards Against Humanity was all it took to come up with a new business idea that has swept Kickstarter by storm.

"We were chatting and some asked why there wasn't a military version of the card game. Nobody was doing it so we decided to," said Army Capt. Justin Burgess, who is stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. He, along with four others, launched War Games LLC in October of 2015 with F.U.B.A.R, a military themed version of Cards Against Humanity, being their flagship product. Now, about 16 work on some aspect of the game, some friends who write for the satire Duffel Blog, some active-duty and veterans.

F.U.B.A.R. aka "‘F'd Up Beyond All Reason", according to Burgess, is a well known and commonly used and recognizable phrase in all branches of the military. F.U.B.A.R. is a 385 card deck, with 100 black prompt cards and 285 white answer cards and large enough to be played on its own.

If you're new to this type of card game, players start with a hand of 10 response cards. One player draws a prompt card and reads it aloud. The others each play a response card they think is the most amusing and if the player with the prompt card picks your response, you receive the prompt card for the point. Whoever has the most prompt cards at the end, wins.

While designed with the military in mind, everyone can play. There are five expansion packs in the works: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and National Guard for those who want a specific game.

In just a short amount of time, the interest and popularity of the product grew. "After Christmas, we launched a Kickstarter campaign with the goal to raise $10,800, just enough to cover the cost of printing five hundred decks," said Burgess. In less than two months, they have exceeded their goal and raised $57,613.

Burgess, a military brat with three deployments behind him, is learning a lot about entrepreneurship. "Most of us are active-duty so we are learning all about running a small business." Ideally, they are looking at selling the game on Amazon and through some military clothing companies. "It's really exciting and has been a wild ride."

War Games LLC pledged to give five percent of all of their initial printings of F.U.B.A.R. to charities with the goal to get the card game into the hands of servicemembers around the world. This includes every USO location across the Nation, as well as overseas support stations for deployed servicemembers. "We are donating five percent of the games free for these locations and have two hundred decks to give away right now," he said. As the company grows, their plan is to increase that amount to ten percent.

Along with the USO, Burgess says they have reached out to Project Home Front and several military clothing and gear companies to cross brand. "Branding is the biggest issue right now. The more we get the word out, the better."

Burgess sees F.U.B.A.R. as a great backbone for the company. "We all play games. We'd like to see the company expand to include other games. America's Favorite Drinking Game is already in the works as a drinking game supplement," he said.

Pledges start at $10 to receive a bumper sticker and increases to $90 for three packs of cards. Because their goal has exceeded $40,000, War Games LLC is offering 440 cards of the Army expansion set and drinking packs for free to those that pledged $70 or more. Those who are just looking to donate money or help a servicemember can "back a deck" on Kickstarter.

With some military charities turning their proceeds elsewhere, Burgess reassures that War Games LLC and F.U.B.A.R is "something concrete." "We send it to USO, and minutes later we get a picture of people using it. The Kickstarter determines everything. If it does well, you might see us in stores," he said excitedly.

With less than two weeks on Kickstarter, their campaign continues to grow daily. "We are working franticly now to get the decks out as fast as possible," said Burgess.
