The Christmas holiday is almost upon us, which means if you haven't already done your holiday shopping, now is the time to get cracking.

One of the best places to bring in the holidays is downtown Sumner. With its string of quaint shops lining Main Street - offering everything from clothing and home décor items to antique furniture and books - there is sure to be something for everyone in your family.

Sugar babies

When Ashley Salas was a young girl, she remembers her grandfather calling her his Sugar Baby.

Just prior to opening her store 10 years ago in Sumner, first as a consignment shop, Salas' grandfather passed away. In memory of her grandfather, she named her store Sugar Babies.

"We focus a lot on baby registries for Mom's one stop shop," Salas said.

On Friday, Dec. 4, from 6-9 p.m., Sugar Babies will host a Mommies Night Out event.

"We will bring in five to six locally owned mommy-owned vendors," Salas said. "We will be doing raffle drawings for prizes that evening."

Sugar Babies has been named Best Children's Clothing Store by King 5 Evening Magazine for six consecutive years. Active-duty military and veterans receive a 10-percent discount. 926 Main St., Suite 104, 253.299.6221, shopsugarbabies.com

Tea Madame Tea Shop

Tea Madame Tea Shop is for those who have a discerning palate for high-quality, hand-produced loose leaf teas and herbs. At its flagship store in Sumner and a new Lakewood location, Tea Madame Tea Shop sells more than 120 varieties, said owner LaDonna Olmstead.

"We have pumpkin spice chai and eggnog in the store now for the fall/winter season," she said. "All my green teas and white teas are from China."

Olmstead said what sets her tea shop apart from others is its focus on quality service to the customer and knowledge about the teas and herbs.

"I'm a certified tea speaker and educator," Olmstead said. "My employees are certified tea specialists."

The staff has been certified by the Specialty Tea Institute. 16009 60th St. E., Suite D, 253.891.2900, tea-madame.com

blue

If you're looking for gently used clothing and household goods at affordable prices, Goodwill's blue boutique shops are a good place to start.

At blue in Sumner, designer clothes are available for women, men and boys, and girls ages 10 years and older, said Store Manager Caroline Hamilton.

Some of the recognizable brands include Rock and Republic, Miss Me designer jeans, The North Face, and Nike.

"We're getting a bunch of high-end fall/winter boots coming in," Hamilton said. "We have winter coats like Columbia and Michael Kors. We already have scarves, mittens, and everything you would need for a cold winter."

Simple Tidings & Kitchen

For 31 years, Simple Tidings has been a destination store for those who love to spend time in the kitchen. Customers can find more than 12,000 kitchen and household essentials - from the more traditional to the bizarre and peculiar - spread over 3,500 square feet.

"We try to have what you would expect, but also items that are unusual or that you haven't seen before," owner Suzanne Kipfer said.

Some of the more unusual: try the switchblade spork, a bigfoot ornament, or how about a wall-mounted swing-away can opener.
