Tacoma and wider western Washington have a bevy of local shopping options. We have a booming Small Business Saturday scene and local shops out the wazoo. There are stores to serve every shopping need, from antiques and jewelry to running gear and beyond. But one of our greatest treasures is a little shop in Proctor that focuses on all local, all the time - the Pacific Northwest Shop.

"If you want to go local, then the Pacific Northwest Shop is the place to think about buying holiday gifts," said owner Bill Evans. "Everything is made in the Pacific Northwest, from the delicious fudge to the Mt. St. Helens Volcanic Ash glass ornaments."

Though the store is not large, a veritable bounty of Northwest goodness resides within its walls. The items make exceptional gift fodder for out-of-state family and friends.

Bonus: On top of a place to buy gifts for others, the Pacific Northwest Shop offers you a gift as well - not having to stand in line at the post office.

"We offer complimentary gift wrap, and we ship for you if you want," Evans said. "We package, insure, and ship everything from wine to glass ornaments to children's books to Market Spice Tea to a huge variety of holiday foods to locally made jewelry."

Tacoma merch

The Pacific Northwest Shop sells items made in and featuring all of the Northwest, but there's nothing wrong with enforcing a little T-Town pride on your friends and family. You'll find small-ticket items like 253 Heart bumper stickers and magnets as well as a Celebrating Tacoma 2016 calendar. Some of the most unique local items are the Tacoma Playing Cards decks, which come in red and blue and feature illustrations of local places by local artists.

Seahawks central

Sure, you can buy someone a Seahawks jersey, scarf or hat, but why go traditional? The Pacific Northwest Shop takes Seahawks gear off the map. On the lower end is 12th Man Seahawks Soap by Quench - a shea butter soap lightly scented with a Seattle rain fragrance. The soap is blue and green with a bold 12 in white on the front. Makes a great gift for Seahawks fans, but makes an even greater gift for your 49er friends in San Francisco.

If your Seahawks friend of choice has finer tastes, no worries. The Northwest is known for its glass art, and the Pacific Northwest Shop sells Seahawks collector glass - blue and green glass vases, vessels, candle holders, and more by local artist Bryan Isaccson.

Food

As soon as you step into the store, to your right is a lovely lineup of Northwest foods. You can't go wrong gifting delicious Northwest treats. Market Spice Tea - Pike Place Market's signature tea, with a strong cinnamon orange taste - is a unique gift for anyone. Seattle Chocolates, smoked salmon gift boxes, honey, jams and coffee are equally as stellar.

Books

Expect a great lineup of books, but some make better gifts than others. Goodnight Washington State (a cute take on Goodnight Moon), Bigfoot coloring books, Native American history books and books featuring Dale Chihuly's artwork are plentiful. The Macrina Bakery Cookbook is also usually in stock, and it's tough to top amazing pastries and breads.

Prints and artwork

Representing the Northwest's artistic side, Pacific Northwest Shop offers art in many media - prints of iconic Northwest scenery or places hang on the wall, pottery and Native American art line the shelves, and jewelry is at the main counter. Twinkling in the window is a full range of glass ornaments by Glass Eye Studios, which makes exceptional gifts guaranteed to win smiles. Glass Eye Studio vases and bowls, glass plates and platters by Jones Glassworks and hand-blown rubber ducks by Ryan Blythe are also available.

The Pacific Northwest Shop is located in the Proctor District at 2702 N. Proctor St., Tacoma. For more information, visit PacificNorthwestShop.com or call 800. 942.3523.
