McChord Field opens its gates to military and civilians alike Sept. 19 for its third annual Salmon Run and Bake. This is a festival celebrating not only outdoor activity, but also one of the cornerstones of Washington state culture and history: salmon.

There are three different races participants can choose from: a 12k, 5k, and a half-mile fun run for kids called the chum run. Though both the 12 and 5k runs will be timed, the chum run is meant purely as fun for children ages 5 and younger.

Each of the runs will be held along mostly flat surfaces surrounding McChord Field. While each chum run participant will receive a finishing medal, those who participate in the two longer runs will compete for prizes based on age group.

Every participant has an opportunity to receive one of several door prizes, which include $100 gift cards to Bass Pro Shop, fishing tackle, rods, reels and more. Members of MWR have also arranged for a great local band to perform some high energy music during the event: the Oly Mountain Boys are a local bluegrass band whose members pride themselves on their high energy music; they bill themselves as playing traditional songs with revolutionary, original bluegrass compositions.

Early registration for the event closes Sept. 9; however, civilians who require a pass to enter base should register no later than Sept. 8. Those who register early will be given a discount of up to $10. Registration is available the day of the race and bake, but will be a higher rate and does not include a participant T-shirt. For military personnel and their families, early registration fees are $5 for the chum run, $10 for the 5k and $25 for the 12k runs; for the salmon bake meal there is an additional $12 fee for adults and $6 for children.

Crews are already putting the finishing touches in place around McChord Field. In previous years, the Salmon Run and Bake has been a huge success; organizers expect nothing less again this year. Fun runs such as this event are a great way to meet your neighbors and community members while having a day full of family fun and great food.

Salmon Run and Bake, 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, 260 Holiday Park Drive, JBLM McChord Field, $5-40 to run. Meal is  $12 for adults and $6 for children with advance purchase. www.jblmmwr.com/
