As summer winds down and the school year looms closer in the future, children and parents alike are searching for the last bit of fun to squeeze out of summer. Joint Base Lewis-McChord's MWR has once again teamed up with Whispering Firs Golf Course to bring a fabulous golf experience for the entire family. August 12th will bring this year's Parent Caddy Golf Jam. This event promises outdoor fun and excitement for the whole family.

The event itself will begin at 9:30 a.m., with a 10 a.m. tee time, at Whispering Firs Golf Course. Jeff Clark, the director of golf, says the Parent Caddy Golf Jam is planned to consist of three holes of regular golf play as well as one additional hole of disc golf for each participant. The event itself is a great way to introduce younger children to the game of golf and allow older children a chance to work on skills already in place with their parents. A parent caddy event is always a special one for the children; they get to take charge and show off their skills on a magnificent course with the support of their parents. Registration is open for all children enrolled in the Child Youth and School Services (CYS) program between the ages of 5 and 18 until Aug.11. While registration does cost $20 per child, parent participation is completely free of charge.

As with previous years, the Golf Jam has been scheduled to coincide with the conclusion of the local Special Olympics Golf Team's six-week practice session. Through this scheduling, MWR has made it possible to not only ensure outdoor fun for all families, but also create a great end of season party for the Special Olympic Team. The culmination of both events is not only a wonderful family experience, it also allows the community to show the strength of their support to the Special Olympics Team that has put in six weeks of hard work into their season. Though the summer may be on its way out, and the school year is just about to begin, attending this year's Parent Caddy Golf Jam could create memories that will last for years. The show of support for our Special Olympics Golf Team shows these remarkable athletes just what they have been practicing so hard for, and that they are not alone in their quests for Olympic gold.
