An Olympia tradition for more than 50 years, Lakefair is five days of can't-miss summer fun!  Held every year during the third week of July, this free fair is packed with activities. This year, opening day is July 15 at noon, and the fun continues until July 19, when the festivities end with a fireworks show around 10 p.m. from the eastern shore of Capital Lake. There will be live performers (on the main stage at Heritage Lake), concession booths, a carnival with food vendors, a 3k and 5k run, a volleyball tournament and more.

Kids' Day is a FREE event that will take place on Saturday, July 18. Held at Sylvester Park in downtown Olympia, the festivities will be located at Capitol Way between Legion Way and 7th Ave. The Capital Lakefair Grand Parade is also on Saturday. The parade begins at 5 p.m. at the corner of Capitol Way and 20th Ave. and ends at the cross streets of Simmons and 5th Ave.

Another fun event is the Lakefair car show, held Friday, July 17 at Marathon Park and along Deshutes Parkway.  Entry for show vehicles begins at 4:15 p.m., and the show runs from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m. The Awards Ceremony will take place at 9 p.m.

Funtastic Carnival provides rides and games during the festival.  You'll find carnival coupons at local businesses and the Lakefair information trailer. Thursday, July 16 is wristband day. Cost is  $35, which allows for unlimited rides for that day. Children must be 2 years old or 36" for most rides.

When you attend Lakefair, you also benefit the community.

"As Thurston County has changed, so has Lakefair, but festival traditions have kept us true to the community we celebrate," said Dennis Williams, Lakefair executive director. "Our royalty program has been constant since Lakefair's inception. Over $330,000 has been raised in scholarship for the royalty program.  Nonprofits have always been an important part of Lakefair's purpose.  Over $250,000 are raised each year through their food sales.  This is money that stays directly in the community to support so many valuable programs.  Lakefair is all about celebrating community spirit!"

So, put a little more fun in your summer and head down to Lakefair! Wednesday, July 15-Sunday, July 19, noon to 10 p.m., Heritage Park (events are held different locations), 330 5th Ave., SW, www.lakefair.org.
