When I was in high school, our Spanish class traveled to Mexico to absorb the culture. One night, we were sitting around in the lobby of the hotel deciding what to do about dinner when one of my classmates came screaming into the room. "GUYS!" he yelled. "I FOUND A MCDONALDS!!" Let's just say, dinner that night had nothing to do with Mexican culture.

The point of this story is that few things help a sudden bout of homesickness like dinner at the same fast food restaurant you used to eat at with friends and family when you were a kid. You could say it's the ultimate comfort food.

And when those fast food restaurants are happy to show their support for the troops by offering sweet military discounts, what more could you ask?

Below is a list of 10 restaurant chains that offer discounts to men and women in the armed services. Unless otherwise noted, the following restaurants offer a 10 percent discount with military ID. The addresses listed are for franchises that are known to offer the discount. Other franchises may or may not.

Whether you're treating the fam to a fast food dinner on the way to soccer practice, or you're just tired of mess hall chow, there's nothing like burgers, shakes and fries to take you back to simpler times.

Sonic, at 5114 6th Ave. in Tacoma, offers old-fashioned burgers and shakes delivered to your car by servers on roller skates. Really. I'm not making this up.

Jack-in-the-Box serves up innovative burgers, like the famous chipotle burger, and fries at 1275 Center Dr. in DuPont.

If classic, juicy burgers are what you crave, Carl's Jr., located at 8125 Main St. SW in Lakewood, might be just the ticket!

Face it. Man cannot live on burgers alone. Well, I've actually known a man or two who probably could, but that's beside the point. When a burger just won't cut it, here are some tasty alternatives.

Seattle's own Ivar's serves up its iconic fish and chips (as well as fried chicken, clams and shrimp) at 10114 S. Tacoma Way in Tacoma.

In the mood for some down home fried chicken? Check out Church's Chicken at 11701 Bridgeport Way in Lakewood.

And then, of course, there's good old Arby's. Deli meat sandwiches made to order and one-of-a-kind curly fries. Yum! They're located right on McChord Field in Building 5280 at the Base Exchange.

For those times when life calls for something a little bit special - maybe even celebratory - you can't beat these fast food franchises for tasty treats that won't break the bank.

Hungry for some frozen yogurt? Black Bear Yogurt, located at 8520 Steilacoom Blvd. SW in Lakewood, offers mouthwatering flavors of premium frozen yogurt, including Greek and fat free. Now there's a treat you can feel good about!

The Dairy Queen located at 17909 Pacific Ave. in Spanaway still offers those nostalgic ice cream treats you remember from your childhood.

For something really special, Cold Stone Creamery creates memorable, customized ice cream cones at 10417 Gravelly Lake Dr. SW, Suite A, in Lakewood.

Finally, who can resist those Cinnabon cinnamon rolls? The smell alone can destroy  resolve. Satisfy that craving at the Cinnabon store inside the Tacoma Mall at 4502 S. Steele St. in Tacoma. Show your military ID for a generous 15 percent discount.

As a member of the military, you make a lot of sacrifices for your country. These fast food restaurants want to show you that they appreciate all you do. So don't forget to flash that military ID and enjoy some of these special discounts. You've earned it!
