If you add up your basic training and other military courses you have already completed, you have practically already completed an associate degree. 

With this brainchild, at Indiana Wesleyan University military personnel receive up to 45 credits toward an online associate degree simply by submitting the training they've already completed. Only a few courses remain to earn an Associate of Science in Public Service and Management (ASPSM).

KC Haight, a 23-year veteran of the Air Force, developed the idea based on his military and post-military experience over the last two decades, pioneering modern military education at some of the top universities for military students. He wanted to create a pathway to higher education for military members who have already completed formal training throughout their military careers.

"At Indiana Wesleyan, we give value to the work our men and women in uniform have done while in the service," Haight said. "Those classes are equal to the work done in the classroom, and they should be counted toward an associate degree."

The focus of this associate degree is public service and management, awarding credit for the service and leadership roles and training of military service members. However, once completed, graduates can move on to a higher degree in any career field they choose. Completed associate degrees transfer as one entity as opposed to transferring individual credits. 

Haight said when it comes to transferring the military experience into college credits, IWU looks at roughly 250 military courses that will transfer into college credit. On average, Haight said, military personnel get credit for 36 credits and many have transferred in the maximum 45 hours toward the 60 credits needed to complete the ASPSM. That leaves only five to eight classes to complete the program requirements.
