When transportation is provided up and down the I-5 corridor, including on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, there are no excuses for servicemembers and veterans to miss out on the upcoming Working with Our Troops King County Career EXPO, which will be held Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Washington State Convention Center.

"This career expo will provide an opportunity for servicemembers to connect with employers that are actively looking for veterans and veteran family members because of the skills and abilities they possess," said King County Veteran's Program Business Outreach Coordinator Rich Garmong.  "It is a job seeker's market, and our veteran job seekers will have the ability to review and connect with more than one hundred employers."

Employers will represent a multitude of different industries, ranging from major Fortune 500 Corporations to small local businesses, as well as various federal, state, city and county agencies.

"We have a large selection of opportunities for those seeking their next career," Garmong said.

Collaborations among various agencies and employers help provide opportunities for servicemembers and veterans interested in finding new careers.

However, this event wouldn't be possible if not for the generosity and assistance provided by the Washington State Convention Center.

Not only is transportation provided, but also parking for the event and even lunch.

"The Washington State Convention Center has once again outdone themselves in supporting this event by providing the space, the tables, electrical support, Wi-Fi, staffing needs, and, for the third year in a row, boxed lunches for the employers and registered job seekers," Garmong said.

Employers have already made a myriad of employment opportunities available to prepare for the expo. But employers shouldn't be the only ones preparing for the expo - here are a few tips for job seekers planning to attend:

  • Bring a strong curiosity about the companies you are interested in
  • Go online and research the companies to find out what their culture is like
  • Come prepared to ask questions, and make sure to engage the recruiter with company-specific questions that show you did your homework
  • Bring multiple copies of an updated resumé that represents career goals, achievements and skills
  • If you are serious about the company, APPLY ONLINE before the event so you are an applicant and not just a job seeker
