Military kids move around a lot. They have to pack up and relocate throughout their childhoods, what with their parents being transferred from base to base. Coming from a military family myself, with veterans on both sides, this is how I wound up with a father born in France, a mother born in Hawaii, a stepfather born in Germany, and why I spent the better part of two weeks tracking down documentation for every patch of American soil abroad that my relatives were born on to prove to the TSA that my multinational background yielded an upstanding American citizen and not an aspiring Hans Gruber-like "sky pirate" when I applied for a job with them. But I digress ...

Due to the perpetual transience of Army life, the average military child will attend two to four different high schools in the course of their high school career. Army spouses attending university or trade school face similar obstacles. Planning for the future is extremely difficult when the future is so uncertain. Fortunately, the Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund helps many aspiring students alleviate some of the financial pressure when it comes to continuing education.

The Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund supports Army families by providing merit-based scholarships and grants to the spouses and children of active-duty and retired soldiers living on and around Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The FLFMSF has awarded over $600,000 to JBLM families over the past 25 years. Last Friday, the FLFMSF awarded more than $45,000 in grants and scholarships to 32 Fort Lewis family members at their annual Awards Presentation.
