What you know is assessed from the time you are in preschool.

However, as you get older, the assessments hold more importance.

By the time you reach high school, the exams that you will take to test your knowledge - the ACT, SAT and AP - will help play a role in your future.  These tests will help determine college placement, college eligibility, and even a student's potential to be successful in college.

The good news is that test preparation courses are offered throughout the year at various Pierce County locations.  The bad news is that there are limited testing dates each year. Check out the Web sites for registration deadlines.

Below is a short synopsis of each exam, Web sites and information on testing sites and preparation courses that your high school student can check out.  There is also an exam that will help your child figure out which test is the best one for them.  Also visit college Web sites to see which test is preferred by the school which your student hopes to attend.

ACT

The ACT is a 3.5 hour test that comprises 215 multiple choice questions in English, mathematics, reading, science and a writing test.  The exam is offered to students in grades 6 and above.  It can be taken repeatedly.  Books, online courses and programs are available to help you prepare for the exam.

The following is a list of test sites and testing dates in Pierce County:

Lakewood - Lakes High School - December 11

Olympia - Capital High School - October 23, December 11, February 12, April 9, and June 11.

Puyallup - Emerald Ridge High School - September 11, October 23, December 11, February 11, April 9, and June 11.

Thanks for the info on SAT Prep
I plan to do it this year and was desperate to find some good guidelines to help me get through them. A friend of mine recommended Shmoop. I found their strategies and guidance very helpful. With Shmoop on my side, I’m beginning to think I can successfully tackle SAT!
