For the second year in a row, the Chloe Clark Elementary School in DuPont received an added financial boost. Looking for a novel way to raise funds for additional school activities, the school's PTA came up with the idea of hosting a fun run.

"We were looking for a different way to fund-raise that didn't involve selling things like cookie dough or wrapping paper," PTA member and race organizer Alli Fallot wrote in an e-mail.

Held under gray skies, the May 22 fun run featured a half mile kids' race and a 5K competition open to all ages.

"It's my way of supporting the school," said Capt. Michael Hoffman, HHQ Support Company, I Corps.

Approximately 80 children and 100 adults took part, and the event raised over $1,500, said Fallot.

"It's great to see everyone get involved," commented Hope Rady, before running the half mile run. "I like to run, and I like to help out."

All of the proceeds from the race went directly to the PTA and will be used to enhance the students' education. Some of the activities that receive funding include an art program; the Explorer Track Club, a school-based activity that encourages students to walk/run during recesses; a Fitness-for-Fun Night; a Math Night; a Bike Rodeo; and other family programs.

Approximately 40 to 50 percent of Chloe Clark's student body is affiliated with either the Air Force or Army.

For Maj. Brian Bender the race offered the opportunity for a great time with his family. Matthew, Sam and Kate competed in the half mile run; their mother, Heather, ran the 5K.

"I'm the manager; I provide breakfast," commented Bender, who serves with Madigan Healthcare Services, with a big smile as his family stood nearby. "It's just good to support this school."
