Like many active duty spouses, Susanna Haynie struggled to get information she needed to make a smooth permanent change of station (PCS) move.
She visited numerous Web sites, but never quite found what she was looking for, she said.
"I came into the Army pretty blue-eyed," Haynie, 43, said. "I looked all over for information but I wanted information from other moms, saying this is a good neighborhood, or this is a good school. I visited several forums online, but never found what I needed."
After she spent the summer brainstorming, Haynie - the wife of Major Tim Haynie who recently returned from his deployment with I Corps - started www.militarydutystations. com, a user-friendly Web site earlier this month that includes information from spouses, for spouses, about making a PCS move. Spouses from anywhere in the world can input their experiences and information about military installations.
"I thought, why not pull together and have spouses who have useful information about a duty station type it into one location," said Haynie who was born and raised in Germany. "My Web site lives off the knowledge of military spouses."
A one-stop site, spouses - regardless of their servicemembers rank or service branch - can print a free 29-page PCS guide, which contains terminology, and acronyms, information on your first PCS move, prepare to move, working ahead, packing day, traveling day, and arriving and delivery.
Also military families can use the site to learn facts about their new duty station, such as: the cost of living, which schools are highly rated, crime statistics, and information about the nearby cities. Spouses are encouraged to input info into categories including general, housing, schools, for kids, medical and moving tips.
To access the information visit the site and click on the duty station to which you are moving on the map of the United States.
With more than 1600 hits to the site, since its inception four years ago, Haynie is confident that the site will become invaluable to spouses all over the world, she said.
"It is my hope that this Web site will help spouses make informed decisions for their family," said Haynie who has three children, including a child with special needs. "I plan to improve and constantly update the site so spouses will always have access to the latest information concerning a military installation."
