When Joint Base Lewis-McChord spouse Melissa Forsyth now wakes up in the morning and looks to her nightstand, the first thing she'll see is her husband's smiling face.
The little touch is just one new thing that helps make her bedroom more relaxing and romantic.
Forsyth won The Ranger/Northwest Airlifter Feng Shui Romantic Bedroom Makeover Contest, where she was awarded the services of Feng Shui design consultant Kat O'Brien of Placement Design in Tacoma to help make her bedroom a little more inviting.
While there were certain design constraints due to base housing regulations, the two worked together to create a restful, relaxing and intimate bedroom setting.
"We wanted to create a space of calm ... that's the whole idea," O'Brien said.
That was achieved after removing some clutter from the room and bringing in some pictures for the wall and nightstand.
"Seeing your spouse when you wake up is really important, especially when they're deployed and the couple is separated for long periods of time," O'Brien said.
The changes also opened things up in the room.
"De-cluttering gives us more (overall) room and it makes the room more romantic-looking," said Forsyth, a Florida native who's lived on base for two years.
And while the team opted not to paint the room, Forsyth said that is definitely something she will consider in the future when the family purchases a home. That will likely entail bringing in an aqua teal color, which reminds her of her home state.
"She was able to get some ideas for down the road," O'Brien said. "Bringing in that color can give you a feeling of home so you don't miss it quite so much."
