It is suggested that the job and duties of a stay-at-home mom could rival the workload of any career. If you spent even a few minutes in the bustling household of Rachel Leach during a playgroup session, you'd certainly agree. From lessons on sharing to arguments over where a Cinderella doll was last seen, the action never stops, and luckily, with more than one mom on hand, everything is under control.
Leach, who is president of the MOMS Club West in DuPont, finds that in addition to helping with her children the club serves as a way for adults to form peer relationships, especially for those frequently moved around in the military.
"We move, and we have to make new friends. We are far from family, and our husbands are often absent. So we're alone, and it's tough" said Leach, whose husband is the operations officer for the 1-377 FA Air Assault.
The club has very few restrictions. For instance, there are no age limits in place for the children, and it is easy to join. There is one business meeting a month to discuss service projects as well as any member needs, and the annual dues are just $20. Member moms can participate in playgroups for various ages, have access to an informal babysitting co-op that comes in handy for doctors' appointments, and take organized group trips to farmers markets and parks.
"People do seem to grow out of the club when their kids go to school," said Leach. "But the club - and the organization as a whole - support kids and parents of all ages."
And the support of parents is important. In the DuPont club specifically, close to 75 percent of members are military, and a majority of those are currently involved in a deployment. Having a support system in place that can truly relate to the struggles associated with temporarily being a single parent is invaluable.
Recently when a club member lost her husband in Afghanistan, the moms rallied around her and personified the helping hands aspect of the club.
