Sitting on the intersection of West Way, Lewis Drive, and Pendleton Avenue is a charming brick building that houses the Officers' Spouses' Club Ways and Means Store. The cottage opened in November 2008. Remarkable sale items such as the Fort Lewis afghan, patriotic stained glass, cleverly designed humorous to patriotic signs, baby items, bead-wrapped silverware and so much more are made and donated by local soldiers' spouses or those who have moved elsewhere but continue to contribute. Sale profits become part of the welfare fund that is one of the essential reasons for the continuation of OSC. The club "exists to promote friendship, foster a spirit of goodwill at Fort Lewis, and support welfare and community service projects." There are 170 members. All of the work at the club's store is done by volunteers.
According to Annie Limberg, who is a steadfast volunteer, OSC is accepting applications from any organization that could utilize scholarships or grants this spring. In February, the welfare committee meets to decide the allotments that will be given to organizations both on and off post.
One of the main recipients of the profits from OSC is Fisher House, where families of wounded soldiers stay for free while the soldier recuperates. OSC provides meals for the Fisher House several times a week.
