Home beer brewing enthusiasts looking for some validation that their brew is indeed the best on the block now have an opportunity to test their recipe against others in the area.

McChord's 62nd Force Support Squadron opened registration Wednesday for the third annual McChord Brewfest. Cost is $7 for first entry and $5 for each additional entry. Registration ends March 17 and judging takes place March 20.

The competition, which is sanctioned by the Washington Homebrewers Association and the Beer Judge Certification Program, gives servicemembers, civilians and retirees the chance to enter their brew in a variety of categories and get professional feedback from those qualified in the finer points of beer tasting.

"Their entry is going to be judged by someone that is nationally and locally certified to judge a beer," said event coordinator Josh Boisvert. "Home brewers are their own breed. It's important to them to get that feedback."

The event is designed to help encourage interest in homebrewing for non-brewers and to make connections between current brewers, Boisvert said.

"That way people can improve on their own beers," he said.

Entries will be accepted in the following categories: American Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, Stout, Porter and Lagers.

The contest requires each competitor provide a sampling of the beers, which they enter into the competition in one to two ounce samples at a tasting on March 20. The Brewfest kicks off at 4:30 p.m. March 26 and will include homebrew and local commercial beer tasting, food, door prizes and the announcement of the homebrew competition category winners.

Contestants can also drop off their entries at The Beer Essentials (2624 S. 112th St. #E-1, Lakewood), which has helped sponsor the competition since its inception.

"When homebrewers are doing something new, they want to see if their brew meets the standard of higher beers," said Bruce Kiewall, an employee at the shop. "Homebrewers are very passionate about their craft,"

There will be first, second, and third place AHA/BJCP medals awarded in all categories judged. Awards will also be handed out for first, second, and third-place winners for the Best of Show competition as determined by the judges.
