From splashing at the pool to playing paintball, there are plenty of things to keep kids and teens busy on Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
The Armed Forces Covenant (AFC) Arena Skating Rink (2275 Liggett Avenue) offers several open-skate sessions during the week as well as specialty sessions such as Stroller and Tot skate (Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m.; cost is just $1) and Teen Skate (Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m.; cost is $2.50 for 13-15 year olds, $3.50 for 16 to 18 year olds). For more information, call (253) 967- 4458.
Bowling is another kid-friendly on-post activity, and with lanes on both JBLM Main (2272 Liggett Avenue, (253) 967-4661) and McChord Field (737 Jackson Blvd. (243) 982-5954), it should be easy to find an open lane. Pay by the hour or the game. Youth leagues are held on Saturdays at 9 a.m., and new players can join anytime.
Looking to keep your child's swimming skills sharp over the winter? Try a free, indoor, heated pool. Through Oct. 31, open swim is available at Kimbro indoor pool, located at the McVeigh Fitness Center (2161 Liggett Ave. (253) 967-5026). On Nov. 1, recreational swimming will move to Soldiers Field House (3236 2nd Division Drive, (253) 967-5390) while Kimbro undergoes extensive renovations, including the addition of a zero-depth kiddie pool.
When the weather is warm, stop by the beach at American Lake or the McChord outdoor pool (both open May to September), the AFC Arena Splash Park or the AFC Arena playground (open year round).
On-post options for older children include an off-road vehicle park, a shooting range and paintball.
Kick up some dirt on an all terrain vehicle (ATV) at JBLM's off-road vehicle park, (2nd Division Range Road), open weekends and holidays from sunup to sundown. A day pass is $15, and a few ATVs are available for rent. For more information or to check rental availability call (253) 967-7056.
A safe place to shoot off some steam - and a few targets - is at JBLM's recreational shooting range. Located at Range 15 near the East Gate, the range features berms from 10 to 300 yards. Open Fridays (through October), Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $7 for ID cardholders and $10 for guests. For more information, call (253) 967-9803.
For a different form of shooting, stop by the JBLM paintball field (4535 Vancouver Road, JBLM-North). Run by Paintball, Inc., the facility is open for play Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekdays by reservation. Cost is $20 and includes use of the course, all day CO2 refills and rental gear, if needed. Paintballs are available for purchase, starting at 500 for $15.
